ENS generates revenue from registration fees and premium name fees on .eth names
.eth Revenue
The ENS protocol generates revenue from the registration of .eth ENS names.
.eth ENS names can be registered on app.ens.domains, as well as third-party registration platforms, such as ENS Fairy, ENS.vision, and Rainbow wallet.
All revenue generated by the registration of .eth ENS names goes to smart contracts that are controlled by the ENS DAO.
Annual Revenue
ENS started generating revenue from name registrations on May 4, 2019. The total revenue generated in 2019 was 2k ETH.
As of October 2024, ENS has generated 43.8k ETH in revenue since launch. Realtime protocol revenue can always been seen on Google Data Studio and Dune.
Name registrations
The price for registering a .eth name varies depending on the length of characters.
Characters | Example | Price (USD) |
3 characters | abc.eth | $640 / year |
4 characters | abcd.eth | $160 / year |
5 characters or more | abcde.eth | $5 / year |
Names can be registered for any amount of time into the future. Most users register their names for somewhere between 2 and 20 years. The longest name registration is currently roguegod.eth, which is registered for almost 7,000 years.
Once names expire, registrants have a 90 day grace period where they can extend the registration of their .eth ENS names.
It is currently only possible to register names that are three characters or more. The DAO has the ability to allow the registration of one and two character names in the future.
Temporary premiums
Once the grace period expires, a name enters a temporary premium auction. During a temporary premium auction there is a fee added to the registration price over and above the normal registration fee for that name.
The temporary premium fee starts at $100m USD to allow the auction to commence without the name being registered.
The auction takes place over 21 days. By the end of the 21 days, the temporary premium fee will be 0 and the name is available to register at the normal registration fee.
During the temporary premium auction, the temporary premium fee declines exponentially until it gets to 0 on day 21.
Most names on temporary premium are registered for a fee less than $100k USD.
