ENS Labs is a non-profit organization responsible for the core software development of ENS
ENS Labs Limited is a Singapore-based non-profit organization responsible for the core software development of ENS. This includes the core ENS contracts, the ENS Manager app, the ENS metadata service, open source libraries like ensjs, and documentation.
Funding
ENS Labs was founded as a non-profit company thanks to a $1m grant from the Ethereum Foundation. ENS Labs has also received grants from Chainlink, Protocol Labs, and others listed here.
Aside from grants, ENS Labs is funded by ETH raised in the short-name auction in late 2019. For the initial distribution of 3-6 character names, an auction was run in conjunction with OpenSea. The auction raised 5,699 ETH, worth ~$1.1 million at the time. Prior to the auction, only names with 7 or more characters were available for registration.
ENS Labs has never received VC funding.
